The fundamental tenets of the Catholic culture seemed to be interesting and an enigma. This was the reason why I wanted to take part in certain catholic events to understand about the culture. Even though the purpose was to understand about the cultural nuances for the assignment, this process enabled in gaining of a number of newer insights in this process. This attending of the church on a Sunday was the event that was undertaken by me. These have been detailed in the process. The purpose of this analysis is to interact with the target culture and understand about the nuances of the cultural communication.
To explain further with an example, this was one of the conversations that I had.
Senior woman in her 70s came up to me and asked me when entering the church,
“You look new to this place. Welcome to the Church, hope you like the experience”
I smiled and said, “I am sure, I will”.
Then she proceeded to say that she attends the church sermons every Sunday for the past two decades and in general spoke about her experiences. This made me feel welcomed. She introduced me to another couple. They all were nice and pleasant. It was evident that all the people in the church were welcoming. I then developed irrational fear that they might not like me. Nevertheless, this was not true. The people were generally amiable and were friendly.
On retrospection, I tried to add the Allport theory of social contact.
From this, it is alluded that the group members treated each other with equal status. They all considered them to be Christians and respected God. The common goal that was discussed with the people was to gain the ways to connect and aide the community. The interaction between the members was based on mutual respect (Pettigrew, and Tropp, 2006; Robertson, 1991). Similar kind of treatment was found in this case as well. The cultural intelligence that was used was emotional factor. I tried to discuss about the ways to help the community and asked question to the people about their religion. The people were in general excited to talk about god and how the church contributes towards reaching the goal of helping the other people in the community.It was evidently a productive interaction. This enabled me to gain perception about the events and gained more knowledge about how churches essentially work.
