Globalization is the free movement of capital, goods and resources across nations for spreading business operations and exploring new opportunities. Even people migrate across national borders in search of better livelihood. The concept of globalization however is not new and it started way back in the 19th century, even at a bigger scale than today. Only the outbreak of the World War I could bring this movement to a dramatic halt.
Although it has been widely proclaimed that we live in a global age, this report challenges the world described as a global village by many voices, where free trade of good, services and even human resources can be carried on without any hassle (Hall, 2000). The self-proclaimed modern societies of today are far from being globalized. They feel insecure, fearing the changes that globalization might bring along. This report highlights the fact that nothing has changed from the 19th century till today. Global integration and technological revolution encourage expansion of economies, open borders and free trade. However, a new nationalist surge, stronger than it ever was, has shocked the advocates of globalism. This new nationalism is the main cause of Brexit and election of Donald Trump as the president of USA.
It is an acceptable fact that nationalism is imperative for people of a nation to lead quality life, but it has been one of the root causes of war, terrorism, hatred against people from other cultures, religions, nations, disruption of peace and harmony and loss of innocent lives. Nationalism gives wings to international politics, and many atrocities have been committed by people in the name of nationalism and on behalf of nationalist leaders. The approach of this report is to understand the rising nationalist populism, its impact on globalization.
Nationalist populism is important to maintain the sovereignty and uniqueness of a nation to an extent, but extreme nationalism can only lead to an ugly world full of hatred and contempt. Owing to all these theories, extreme level of populism can never be positive for any country.
