In addition to the above discussed technical skills, the sound engineer must also possess the needed professional skills. Professional skills are concerned with people management skills, time management and personal management. Groves makes an excellent claim when he states that the sound engineers and their expertise grow with years of experience and learning in their profession. In his classification of the functions of the sound engineer, Groves considers both responsibilities of the engineer pertaining to the production recording and dubbing, and the associated engineering and maintenance. The sound engineer herein has to play many roles. Such skills are not obtained easily, as Groves states “these men were originally recruited largely from the telephone and engineering fields, and in the majority of cases have reached the present state of efficiency in their art as a result of fifteen or twenty years of training and experience in the recording of sound for motion pictures” (Groves, 1947, p. 221). Time management at the personal level has contributed to the creation of a better sound engineer. In his work on sound production and engineering, it could be noted that Groves worked with a similar kind of commitment. His focus on continuing professional development is what led him to pioneer newer sound techniques and practices such as the one used in ADR, the radio microphone and more.
