Every art form has a complicated yet rich history that has various self expressions and rhythm. Some of the forms in Latin dance have been descended completely by the Latin cultural sphere but some Latin forms have been adopted from the distinct influences. These influences include the native influence, Upper-class European influence and African influence. The history starts back with the 15th century when various European explorers came and roots of various dance forms were found. Origins of this dance form like Rumba and Salsa originated from the South and Central America (Bakan, 2012). Both these forms are some of the most famous dance forms and these forms have geographical influences. This essay will look at various dance forms of Latin dance form and how they have adopted from various cultural influences.
Origins and Ritualistic beginnings
African influences on the Latin dance forms
Music rhythms from the African region were always liked by the audience and these rhythms when combined with the Latin dance forms created a magic on the stage. When various European settlers brought African slaves with them, they survived on their local music and since forms. These dance forms were introduced in South America and North America after a century. Various forms of Latin dance have been influenced from the African influences like Polycentric movement, polycentric rhythm, Improvisation, Body isolations etc. Additions in body movements like: bent the knee focusing downward and in European dance form knees had to be focused upward. Changes in the whole-foot steps in the form of standing on the toes or heels only were a new introduction which was liked by the audience. Another body change was introduced in the form of isolating upper body and moving the lower body to create a new form of rhythm so people can only concentrate on the lower part of the body. Various social influences can also be observed on Latin dance forms (Madrid and Alejendro, 2008). When Africans were facing trouble in European region and they were being treated like salves just for being black and ethnic minority they started their art forms. Latin’s were also discriminated on the basis of their ethnic minority. They combined with blacks and started to form collaborations for music and dance forms. Due to social distress, both these minorities combined together and new dance forms emerged. Latin dance forms were combined with the local folk music of Africans and this combination helped in making various unique dance genres that are still famous all over the world (Drake and Elizabeth, 2011).
