The population of old people is large in general and keep growing due to advanced health care education. According to the 2011 Census, there were 3 million people aged 65 and older resident in Australia. Over half of them were aged 65-74 years (Australian Bureau of Statistics 2011). Moreover, Although more than half of older people were married (57 percent), around 26 percent of them were widowed. It means 26 percent of older people probably lived alone.
Social isolation and loneliness are known as risk factors for a range of health including health and mental health (Grenade & Boldy 2008). However, the risk factors cause to social isolation and loneliness among older adults were not well awarded and understood by the public (Grenada & Boldy 2008). I am currently doing a volunteer at an aged care program in Glencare. This experience allowed me to observe and know more about old people’s life in Australia. In this aged care program, volunteers’ work was organising some activities for old people who lived nearby. We need to pick up and drive them to the event every Tuesday. Through engaging with these old people, I noticed that most of them feel loneliness and have a poor health condition. As a volunteer, I want to figure out the risk factors contribute to social isolation and loneliness in old adults. As a social worker, I want to know how to increase the social connection for these old people and improve old people’s health and mental health and wellbeing outcomes. This is also one of the reasons why I chose this research topic.
