Raising Arizona is a crime comedy. The couple performs an unethical and illegal act but they did not have a wrong motive. They stole a child for their happiness. They are friendly people with well- intentioned action. They want to do right thing but could not follow the right path because of their desperation for child. The scene, where Ed learns about her infertility, is deeply emotional. Their sorrow and despair can be understood. They see a ray of hope when they learn about the quintuplets.
Ed says ”They have more than they can handle, anyway”, when she reads the article about the quintuplet. Kidnapping a child is illegal and morally incorrect. However, the couple didn’t have ill intentions. They only wanted to complete their family. Hi being a protective and caring father, garners sympathy from the audience.
The complete ‘family unit’ faces hardships and adverse conditions. H.I. dreams of a wall of fire which produced a silhouette of a leather-clad, grease-ridden biker. H.I. and Ed are greeted by H.I.’s prison buddies, Gale and Evelle, who prove to be a bad influence. Though dedicated to his family, hi is tempted to return to his wicked life. Gale and Evelle signify the importance of peer influence on a person. H.I.’s guest get suspicious about the baby. Their problem doesn’t end here. Their lives get complicated after a picnic with H.I.’s supervisor Glen and his wife Dot. H.I. ends up punching his supervisor Glen when he suggests wife-swap.
That night, when they go shopping, hi ends up stealing at the convenience store. H.I. gets arrested and Ed leaves with the baby. Glen fires hi and also blackmails him for he found baby’s true identity. H.I.’s buddies overhear this and ends up kidnapping baby. Gale and Evelle leave the baby behind when they rob the bank. Ed snatches the baby from Leonard Smalls and flee. Leonard Smalls is blown into pieces when the grenade explodes. Ed and H.I. sneaks the baby back into Arizona and are confronted by Nathan senior. Nathan sr. doesn’t handover the couple to police for he understood the reason for their action. That day, H.I. dreams about Gale and Evelle voluntarily returning to the prison. The movie ends beautifully.
