Women play a major role in the Chipko movement which is illustrated in Hindi as Chipko that denotes “to hug or to stick.” It also signifies that the women try to save the trees like their child. Chipko movement is an environmental movement concerned with the saving of trees and forestry for preserving their traditional factor, biological and ecological balance and biodiversity. Although many of the leaders were men, women also played a very significant role because they were the one most affected by the out of control which causes a shortage of fodder and firewood as well as water for drinking and irrigation as well. But all these efforts were not so strong and organized as we see in the case of the Chipko movement.
The Chipko movement accumulated rapid drive as it rode the wave of spiritually (Rangan, 2007). The women belonging to that region have a strong bond with the trees which give them the energy to take this movement. This step by the women of the Himalayan region inspired other women to fight for their rights. During the floods and the landslides, the women and the kids’ become more affected by that. So by the call of Mahatma Gandhi women came out from home and joined this Chipko movement to save trees and forestry.
The Chipko movement was mainly focused on the saving trees and gained popularity. The activists in the movement formed groups by increasing in number of people. The movement was focused on saving the natural resources and many people supported it. The Chipko movement is considered as one of the most effective environmental environment that has gained popularity. The Gandhian non-violent method was also a success. The protection of the trees with the adoption of the movement was deeply associated with the spiritual facts(Moore, 2011).The Chipko movement was not only saving the tress but it also states that the natural resources like forest belonged to people and it is important for the survival of many people. The movement is an environmental movement which is major concern for many countries.
