It came to be known the rust belt quintessential city that exhibited various characteristics to describe a city with urban decline. Starting from 1970s onward, city of Buffalo decline has been a phenomenon of regional nature driven through demographical outlook. This has accelerated migration and de-industrializing. Unlike the metropolitan growing areas of U.S, urban decline patterns in Buffalo have looked same to the ones identified in cities that are shrinking such as Leipzig and Dresden. Unaffordable housing in such a scenario makes the impact on urban decline to be further negative (Smith, 1996). This research paper has been prepared with the key essay thesis statement of exploring the way in which unaffordable housing impacts the urban decline of Buffalo. This has been focused upon by keeping in perspective literature review conducted on the topic previously. Focus has also been laid on how the influences have further deteriorated the Buffalo region urban decline perspective strategically and comprehensively.
Unaffordable housing influences on urban decline
The real estate market of Buffalo in essence has remained soft for several years. This is mainly attributed to a sustained deterioration in the demand for houses driven through change of economic and demographic nature. The processes affecting housing market of Buffalo mirror those that have been identified through Goodman (2005a) in other central city of U.S and its housing markets. These have negatively been influenced through shifts of demographic nature and decline in housing demand (Silverman et al, 2013).
A consequence of such a change has been vacant and abandoned property growth within the city. One of the structural decline ramifications within population as well as employment lies in the vacant and abandoned property chronic problem. Researchers such as Accordino et al (2000) have connected properties of vacant and abandoned nature to various ills of the society and economy inclusive of crimes over property, trafficking drug, decline or sudden increase in values of property and the public coffers burden related with vacant lots management and demolition (Rappaport, 2013). The issue of residential property abandonment is also an essential theme within the literature on shrinking cities or urban declining cities. Literature has suggested that abandoned residential structures targeted demolition is an essential precursor to stabilize the Buffalo cities housing markets which has experienced a decline sustainably (Weaver and Bagchi-Sen, 2013). Addressing the issues of abandonment in the long term requires focus over identifying the factors connected with it and recognizing the shift in paradigm among the makers of policy. This also requires a focus over growth and focus over ensuring the city has a right size.
