This literature review will focus the risk factors for social isolation and loneliness in older adults. The review part will be divided into three section. Definition of social isolation and loneliness in older adults, risk factors for social isolation, Protective factors and intervention for social isolation and loneliness among older people and the impact of these on old people’s health and mental health. The role of social worker in facilitating reducing social isolation and loneliness will also be discussed at last.
Cacioppo et al. (2011) studied historical social isolation based on the evidence from human and non-human animal studies. The author defined social isolation as lack of interaction and contact between an individual and society (Cacioppo et al 2011). For example, sometimes people would make some decision which is opposite to the most of people. It could also become a reason to be isolated. It means social isolation is a temporary situation and could be changed in short time. The difference between social isolation and loneliness was also identified in this studies.
