Recreational activities are the activities that people are involved in, the leisure time and the time bracket that people spend doing something that they like. There is a difference between the two. Recreational activities are treated to be an essential part of the life lead by human beings which is influenced by the surroundings, social status and the interest one has in a particular field. These activities can be passive, active, communal, solitary healthy, not healthy and so on. Often hobbies are taken up to be recreational activities and might include activities like reading, sports, gardening, studying or travelling. There are other recreational activities like gambling and drug use which are illegal and violate laws.
At the same time, leisure time is free time. Anything that is done apart from everyday work and business is leisure time. This has to separate from the work, job hunting, education, domestic chores and business. It is said that it is quantifiable keeping in mind the overtime work that people do. It emphasizes and liberates the individual’s sense of freedom and choice that one can make without thinking about the mundane pressures of life. It is something that one does for oneself and can be called the ‘nonproductive time’ (Sirgy, 2010).
Travelling can be taken up as a recreational activity and people can travel in their leisure time and both are different, but one thing that remains common is the relationship they both have with the quality of life of the tourists. When one is talking about the quality of life in this case, one refers to the quality of life that the tourists have, while their recreational activities include time or that they travel in their leisure time. Travelling enriches the life of the person and overall improves the quality of life of a person (Neal, 1999). This can be safely said because firstly the tourists gain rich and incomparable experiences when they are travelling.
Seeing new places, things and people give a positive insight which is definitely an improvement in the mundane life. Secondly, when people are indulging themselves in travel oriented activities people tend to be happier. Thirdly, people when travelling in their leisure time relaxes, socialize, and participate in more activities which overall satisfies their need as humans needing a break from the everyday life. It also enhances their experiences in all ways. Lastly, travelling as an activity is never a waste of time therefore can be part of the recreational activities or a part of the leisure time for positive experience thus improving the quality of life.
