The baroque period falls between late Renaissance and early Classical period. The baroque musicians initially served church and nobles until the 18th century that some of composers started to work independently. Prelude, in Baroque era, was played as a preface to succeeding movements of a composition that were more complex and long. In this period, a prelude for organ using chorale tune was a predominant style. Johann Sebastian Bach used chorale prelude in his arrangement of ‘Gelobet seist du, Jesu Christ’. It was the earliest melody recorded in the baroque period. Baroque artistic values started to dissolve as there was a shift in cultural values due to diverse experiments . Up until this period, musicians were concerned with alteration of the pitch in a melodious way. Gradually, composers started to manipulate texture of the prelude. It was the period of rich musical creativity and experimentation. Many fine performers were also found in this era who composed preludes containing mixture of baroque, renaissance and classical features. In the later phase, demand for better skills in prelude orchestra started to emerge. There was a growing force on the virtuosity due to continuous shift in texture and articulations. This continued until the Chopin’s prelude came into existence.
