The most gripping aspect of documentary making was learning about six different modes of representation namely, Poetic, Observational, Reflexive, Participatory, Performative and Expository defined by Nichols (1991). To assess the documentary description in critical manner, I watched few documentaries screened in classroom and recommended by tutors. The Israeli animated war documentary ‘Waltz with Bashir’ directed by Folman in 2008 helped me in viewing Performative mode in clearer way as it associates several real-life events of politics and history insisting on subjective experiences and emotional responses through flash animation technique. After watching this movie, I found myself contemplating on the destructive consequences of wars, and making resolution to contribute in maintaining peace around me and in the society. Rouch and Morin’s 1960 documentary ‘Chronicle of a Summer’ depicting interviews of people from Paris discussing French life of workers and related social issues assisted me in comprehending its observational mode of representation.

It constructed a truthful picture of events justifying Verov’s quote “life caught unawares” (Morris, 1987) due to the limited use of devices spontaneously capturing real life scenes without any interference, artificial pompous backgrounds or any voice-over narration which appealed to me very much. From this film, I learnt to analyze different social classes existing in our society and promised myself to treat all human beings equally without any bias which is a key of spreading happiness in the world. The participatory mode illustrated by ‘Super Size Me’ amused me due to the repetitive and striking presence of the director Spurlock questioning, inciting and motivating the health professionals, restaurant workers and random people on the street to draw impulsive responses from them. It made me acknowledge the importance of diet and persuaded me to change my unhealthy eating habits. This interactive mode taught me how the filmmaker’s involvement in the documentary through his hard voice and face-to-face encounters with participants can strengthen the content and make it more relatable and thought-provoking (Nichols, 1991).
