Since long I always fantasized myself as part of the media fraternity and being involved in high profile current affair programs, breaking news and interviewing the most prominent people working in various fields.Thanks to media literacy in classrooms I am now better able to take the relevant course guidelines and pursue a career where I make myself useful as an efficient media expert and bring you the most happening events, discussions and issues happening around the world. Media literacy education grooms its students to think critically, analytically and understand the messages obvious and hidden from the media industry (Krueger & Christel, 2001).
Rogow(2004) said that media literacy develops the skills in students where they learn to access, evaluate, analyze and produce media. A classroom conducive environment where the teacher provides the students a richer perspective to the media industry may prove to enhance and develop a high key analytical and intellectual mind of the student. By involving the student in discussions, sharing real life event news, issues and other aspects from over the globe all creates a sense of realization and keep them updated(Hobbs, 2011).
A role of a good class room or teacher lies in respecting the choices and opinions students make themselves and teach them all areas of media schools of thought and not just focus on one aspect. Thomas and Jolls 2004 holds the view that media literacy helps to empower the citizens where they have an access to the skills and subjects they want to learn and not just wait only for a typical teacher student approach that has become quite dated. Media literacy now is much more advanced for the teachers to teach and for the students to learn (Crano & Prislin, 2011).
To further learn of its effectiveness let’s find out the view of Cynthia Schiebe(2004) who says that there should be a curriculum devised on how to teach media literacy to the students, which will better regroup all the necessary concerns and the teaching should be more applied with touch of history and theory too.
So in today’s class room there is a huge place for media literacy which is greatly contributing in developing a positive and critical approach of thinking out of the box and also learn and decode the messages being shared according to students own views and opinions.
