I grew in a homogenous and tightly-knit Chinese community. Here certain actions and streams of thought were considered normal. Nevertheless, all this changed with a personal event. Six years ago, a person close to my heart was sadly diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Her sickness and subsequent treatment significantly impacted our relationship. It was during this time when I was first exposed to the field of psychology and the study of mental illness. The importance of the field of psychology and the fascinating aspects of the mind make me develop an interest in this subject. This is the point where I started to read about the different aspects of psychology and human mind. Though I did not know it at the time, I became particularly interested in the humanistic and motivational theories of Carl Rogers and Abraham Maslow. What resonated with me was this notion that a fulfilled life resulted from the quest to maximize one’s unique individual potential. I somewhat agree that personal change and growth can only come through self-exploration and empathy. This personal experience made me want to be an instrument of change for the people who are struggling.
