The marriage was the only way in which the woman could advance in the world and this action showcased the biases in the society. The notions were to ensure that the men felt safe in the society. The ideology of patriarchy as the moral compass dictates throughout the storyline. The ways in which the women are expected to live has been dictated by the society. This statement shows the expectation by the society. The moral compass of the society has been exposed by Angela school of thought where she says “The only thing I prayed to God for was to give me the courage to kill myself,” Angela Vicario told me. “But he didn’t give it to me.” (Márquez 38)
Angela in this statement is feeling remorse for losing her virginity to Santiago. She feels sad and this quote shows that she wanted to even kill herself. These lines show how the rules of virginity and morality have been intertwined in the minds of the women in the society. The woman is even willing to give up her life owing to the fact that she lost her virginity. This also is a reflection of the cultural values. The women in the societies are found to value the virginity over their life. In this process if the woman developed these tenets on their own accord it would be a form of feminism. Nevertheless, these values of so-called morality have been thrust upon the woman. It is owing to those facts that it seems completely ridiculous in the current times and is found to bear no relevance to the modern society. Angela views her actions to be an action of defect, even though she had not hurt anyone in the process.
