Now it is also the duty of employers like 7-Eleven not to intimidate their employees or bully them. They should in fact work with them and the Ombudsmen to get clarity on the situation and resolve the situation as is required.
Strict enforcement and action is undertaken by the Ombudsmen. The Ombudsmen is a watch dog for fraudulent practices, employee’s exploitation, coercion etc. The Ombudsmen actively supports employee rights and enforces regulations as advised in Fair Work Act, Anti-Discrimination Act etc. It takes actions, sometimes imposing civil penalties as observed in the case of the Brisbane 7-Eleven employer Mr Lo.
In terms of consequences of reports, 7-Eleven should take adequate action to ensure such a breach which led to the original whistle blowing action does not happen again. It should not negatively threaten its employees and must ensure that they are protected from bullying and harassment in the workplace.
A code of conduct based discussion has been conducted for 7-Eleven. The code of conduct for a company ensures the company acts in and ethical, legal and a moral way and promotes the same in terms of inclusion, equality, diversity in the workplace. Code of conduct exists for the purpose of presenting to stakeholders, the commitment of the company to these best practices.
