In the nation of Australia, Intensive English Centres (IECs) are the centres where the high schools teach the teenagers to learn the subject. There is focus on the students to learn the English at a rapid pace. These students are typically students who do not have any working knowledge about the subject and are from different cultures. These are mandatory courses that are taught to the students to learn the language. The students are made to spend a maximum of 30 weeks to learn the language form the IEC. They are made to incorporate orientation, settlement and welfare programs. The students are then integrated with the regular school students in the nation. It is important to understand that this is taught as an ancillary subject to the students in China. The medium of education of the other concepts is not only through English. This is different in the case of Australia. Once the students complete the IEC levels, they are then made to participate in regular schools where the medium of language and teaching are the English language.
In this, the focal group is the Level 1 class who is attending classes in the Melbourne areas. This is a mixed gender class and the students are typically between the ages of 14 to 16. These students are migrated from the mainland China and their immediate goals are to pursue an education in Australia. The number of students who come into Australia want to learn the nuanced language and businesses and eventually plan on returning to their home nation.
Similar to the general curriculum that is offered to the students, the IEC curriculum focuses on aiding the students to learn and develop specific learning skills. The IEC manual is found to provide the examples for each of the genre. The students use the IEC manual to gain certain tenets of the language. Another important aspect of these IEC classes is that the students are made to learn the subject along with the local jargons of the place. There are pragmatics and pronunciation targets that are fostered in these classrooms. These jargons and accents are alluded to be an element that would aide towards gaining proficiency of the language. The students who have basic grasp of the grammatical tenets face the brunt of these issues owing to the issue of accent and jargons that are common to the place. There are narrowing of the English-speaking skills and people expect the students to master the language within a matter of few weeks. These are the issues that need to be addressed by the newer curriculum design.
In the following section, there will be discussion of the ways to enable the students to gain more relative proficiency of the language to gain insights form the global Englishes.
