Whitmarsh (2001) argued “War is a controversial subject, not only because of the death, destruction and suffering involved. Memory of war often forms part of a nation’s self-image. Taking a critical attitude towards past wars may therefore provoke accusations of being unpatriotic. From my field notes and my observations, I could see that the shrine was more about the people. Although dates and times of the war are presented, the people element is what is given more pride of place in the memorial.

Winter (2009) presented that the “Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne, Australia opened in 1934 to articulate the social memory of the Great War of 1914–1918. The site has developed to incorporate other memorials and a Visitor Centre” (p. 553). This shows an evolution of the Shrine with respect to the memories that it was associated with. Winter (2009)’s exploratory analysis of the visitor and their opinions of the Shrine indicated that people expressed both sadness and gratitude for sacrifices. Over the span of the decade, I believe as newer generations and thought processes are evolving people will look at the shrine as a cultural experience and draw more perspectives and experiences than just sadness and gratitude, I for one was inspired. Many visitors have very poor knowledge of what really happened, but they could still carry inspiration with them when they see what the Shrine is dedicated for. I believe the Shrine and stories of the inspiration it has evoked could make it more significant from a global perspective. This is a research gap that could be explored when analysing the Shrine of Remembrance as a site of cultural significance.
