From the results, it could be ascertained that the air quality near the tunnels is very bad and have a serious impact on the people.

In the recent past, a large number of communities have expressed concerns related to the tunnel developments over the years. It is observed that the tunnels have a significant impact on the air quality. In order to find the impact of air quality, the researches were conducted on the people who live near these tunnels. It has been found that there are higher levels of Glyoxal and Methylglyoxal are there near these tunnels. The tunnels also consist of some other harmful compounds such as the subset of oxygenated organic compounds which could be highly reactive. These compounds can also lead to the development of the free radicals ozone and Secondary Organic Aerosols. Some of the carbonyls such as formaldehyde and acetaldehyde have been identified to be primary toxic substances present near the tunnel. These substances can have a vital impact on the human beings (Bari & Naser 2005). The compounds Glyoxal and Methylglyoxal are formed after the oxidation of VOC’s which are emitted from the direct emissions from the tunnels. These tunnels also consist of the harmful gases such as Carbon Monoxide (CO), Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) and Sulphur di Oxide (SO2).
