An affordance has often been referred to as the relationship between an environment or an object and an organism, having the affordability of the opportunity needed for the performance of action by that organism. Digital media technologies are known to be having different properties that raise the doubt as to how these may result in affecting personal relationships, along with the possible roles played in order to support learning. Since recent time, affordance, as a term, is specifically being used in terms of digital media and online technologies (Ito, 2010). This particular concept can be used for understanding the implications of digital media over personal relationships as the theories related to this term are known to be rich sources used to describe how the characteristics of digital media and online technologies come in interaction will all of the other elements in context with relationship that include the parties in communication as well as the physical environment. The significance of this concept has resulted in increasing due to the increase in interactivity amongst people. Further ahead, progress is being made in the hybridizing the current experiences and interactions taking place on daily basis. According to the meaning of affordances, it can be stated that all of these advancements have resulted in blending digital media and communication technologies with their physical counterparts, in a number of different contexts (Boyd and Ellison, 2007). As a significant example, the increase of social media has resulted in having a major impact on the current society and the present generation who are highly active on platforms of social media with a number of different purposes. Some stay active on these platforms for expanding the scope of their social circle, some stay active for maintaining their relationship with other users even though they are in an absolutely different part of the world, and a number of reasons that can be related to commercialization (Baym, 2010). However, it is important to note, as per the theories of affordances, social presence results in underscoring intentional expression and communication for a sense of belonging with respect to the provided community that results in recruiting the participation of interaction in the processes of knowledge building.
