The assignment focuses on analysing the Corporate Social Responsibility policies which are followed by various airline companies such as Virgin Atlantic, Emirates and JetBlue. The concept of carbon emission has been highlighted in this assignment with an aim to see how aviation industries have become one of the primary reasons behind the generation of large amount of carbon in the atmosphere. The analysis of the different carbon emission projects of various airline companies such as Brussels Airlines, United Airlines, Emirates and JetBlue would be discussed in this paper to critically analyse its effectiveness towards the environment.
Furthermore, the concept of sustainable tourism has also been discussed how it can raise awareness among the customers to minimize the rise of carbon emission in the environment. This paper has also elucidated the role of the ethics in sustainable tourism and identified the ethical standards that are important for the carbon reduction projects. Besides, researches have identified the complex conflict between tourism, sustainable development and environment. The disharmony between the three factors have been discussed and it is revealed that with the increasing demand for tourism especially the air tourism, environmental degradation has been occurring which eventually causes violation of principles of sustainable development.
The future development of Virgin Atlantic such as the collaboration with LanzaTech and Natural Capital Partners the company would be able to reduce carbon emission by 30% by the year 2020. The company also aimed to welcome 787s in their fleet and make investment in 12 A350s by the year 2019 so that environmental degradation is prevented and sustainable development is followed. However, the lack of clarity in the carbon reduction projects of Virgin Atlantic has been criticized and termed as green wash.
