A pressure boosting system employs one or more boosting pumps, a type of centrifugal pump, to increase low pressure in a water system where it will reach sufficient water flow and pressure to consumers. The pressure boosting system itself is made up of one or more pumps which are installed to increase the pressure in the system to a point where it is independent of flow and inlet pressure. The pressure boosting system itself has many system configurations. Different configurations have different advantages and characteristics such as comfort level, initial investment cost, running costs, flexibility and supply.
For this project we also decided to use the VFD to control the pressure boosting pumps. The VFD controlled systems is able to deliver the exact amount of water which will make the pump very efficient. The VFD systems set point can also be altered according to the flow of the water which will reduce energy loss the reduced pipe resistance. The initial investment of the VFD pressure boosting pump will be higher than a normal pressure boosting pump. However, the running cost will be lower, the comfort level will be very good, and the flexibility of the system is much better. In conclusion, we believe that the VFD pressure boosting pump will be overall better than the standard normal pressure pump in the long run.
