Leimeister et al (2006, p.279) defines a virtual community VC as “A VC consists of people who interact together socially on a technical platform. The community is built on a common interest, a common problem, or a common task of its members that is pursued based on implicit and explicit codes of behaviour. The technical platform enables and supports the community’s interaction and helps to build trust and a common feeling among the members”.
Rheingold (2000) in his book, “The Virtual Community”defined three important characteristics that have to be satisfied by an online community in order to be considered as a virtual community. These three important characteristics also assure the success of virtual communities. It has to be a group of members that are joined together for a common purpose (Papacharissi, 2009). The community is held together by some form of a shared identify. LinkedIn is a virtual community because people in LinkedIn are connected by business associations and opportunities. They have a shared sense of professionalism as well. The three components that Rheingold (2000) stated are the social network capital, the knowledge capital and the communion. The social network capital is basically the network that supports the users. The knowledge capital is the connection of associated information in the virtual community. And finally, the communion is the connection.
It is the purpose of this work to choose one virtual community and discuss factors that make it a success. How the community has flourished is the subject of discussion. Factors that could potentially make it difficult to sustain in the future are also discussed. The VC is chosen for analysis here in LinkedIn. LinkedIn is a professional social networking Virtual community. The key factors established in the book of Rheingold (2000) helps conduct the analysis.
