There were five participants each in the three focus groups. The original design was having one group consisting of both male and female participants; the second was consisted of only female participants, and the third group of only male participants. The selection of this structure was for eliciting viewpoints which are unique from the participants that has been resultant of the presence of both male and female participants, only female participants and only male participants. Petronio and Martin (1986) researched disclosure of information with respect to the differences in gender. Because of the conflicts of the scheduling and the availability of the volunteers, there was intention of the focus groups that all participants who are male required to be running as another with mixed females and males. There was offer from the researcher with a full course lunch as compensation to the focus group’s participation.
The focus group participation’s average had been 28.53 years old, and the average number of tattoos had been 3.4. It should be noted that there had been higher skew by a single participant, who had 21 tattoos. The research showed that there had been 9 respondents with tattoos with an average of 2.11 tattoos. There was one respondent who had a cover up of two tattoos with different tattoos.
Lindlof and Taylor (2002) emphasized the importance of the quality questions in qualitative study. The stated questions’ aim is carried from the earlier research and the gaps (Lindlof & Taylor 2002). Meloy (1994) suggested that the entailment of the qualitative inquiry occurred at once with several steps. However, Leavy (2009) argued that the saturation point can be reached in the qualitative research with respect to the volume of data meant to be analyzed.
The researcher notified that all participants of the focus groups would have audio recordings of the focus groups sessions at the beginning. The audio recordings’ transcription was done personally by the researcher. He listened carefully and repeatedly ensured that there is correct understanding of all words. The efforts are made with respect to the emotions and emphasis of the specific phrases and words of the participants that include pauses between the words and the verbal fillers. This had been done in retaining the narratives of the participants the way their presentation had been done. There had been many situations, where there was overlapping of dialogue and interruption of some participants in certain situations. The documentation of these took place in the way of their occurrence. At places, the dialogue section specifically is fragmented to an extent. There had been narratives’ capturing of the close approximation with respect to the real time happening.
